The Sylvia Beaufoy Centre has an amazing staff and volunteer team, who are committed to serve and support the various groups and individuals who come to the Centre each day, and together help them reach their goals.

Dan Sneller

Dan Sneller

Senior Youth and Community Development Manager

Dan is the lead worker for all projects and works closely with his teams to create what is on offer. Dan has been a paid youth worker since 2007. He finished his degree in Youth and Community work in 2010 when he took on the management of The Purple Bus. Dan has lived in Petworth most of his life and has a good understanding of what it’s like growing up in this area. Dan likes to be outdoors and having an adventure, he has training in taking groups of people walking and mountain biking along many other things. Dan has a passion for young people and want to give them as many opportunities in life as he can. Dan has a wife, 5 children and a dog.

Karen Chessman

Charity Executive Manager

Karen has had a career in HR for over 26 years, previously as an HR Director for the University of Surrey. Working closely with the Board of Trustees and senior colleagues, Karen is responsible for developing the organisation’s long-term charitable strategy, budget and business plan and ensuring it complies with the law and regulations. She is also a County Charity Mentor with Charity Mentors – Free mentoring for charity leaders across Sussex (

She loves Petworth and being part of a welcoming community and has a great passion for our Greenpower project. Karen is married and has two children who both attend the Centre and love it. In her spare time, she is a true family person and loves taking long walks with the dog and spending time as a family.

Danny Bianchi

Youth Coordinator

Danny started as our full-time Youth Coordinator in May 2022, following a period of time working as a Sessional Youth Worker for SBC and a full-time role in the West Sussex Youth Justice Service. Danny loved to get out on his Mountain Bike. Danny is a trained mountain bike instructor.

Britney Oshyer

Sessional Youth Worker

Britney joined the Centre in early 2022 as a Sessional Youth Worker. She helps at three sessions each whilst studying for her degree in Psychology and Law. Britney has also recently qualified as a NVQ level 3 youth worker. 

Laura Sneller

Sessional Youth Worker

Laura started as a Sessional Youth Worker in May 2022 and works 1 session a week, plus school holiday activities. She has worked with children in different settings for over 20 years. Laura also works full time as a Food Technology Teacher.

Jay Gilliland

Sessional Youth Worker

Jay started as a sessional youth worker in September 2023 after he caught the bug for youth work at our 2023 summer residential. Jay works 1 session a week. Jay also works at Blacks Outdoor.

Sally Hall

Sessional Youth Worker

Sally started as a sessional youth worker in September 2023. Sally works 1 session a week alongside working as a Teacher Assistant.


Paul Shanahan


Paul has been a volunteer in our drop in sessions since the Autumn of 2022. Paul has a passion for music and supports our young people in their music creativity.

Claire Simpson


Claire has been a volunteer at our Youth Café since the start of 2023. Claire is a fantastic part and support to these sessions.

Adam Vernon


Adam has been volunteering for our Evolve session since 2020. Adam enjoys supporting our young people in the activities that inspire them. Adam has a passion for seeing communities grow, both here and abroad.

Jamie Chessman

Volunteer - Young Leader

Jamie has been volunteering as a Young Leader with the Evolve session since 2022. As well as attending many of our sessions as a young person, he also volunteers on the Greenpower Project after being the Team Principal in the 2022 season.

He is currently studying his A-levels, and plays guitar and sings in the SBC band, Qualitee Streets.

Peter Chessman

Lead Volunteer - Greenpower

Peter has been volunteering since 2019. He has recently taken the lead role on our Greenpower Project and does a fantastic job. He lives in Petworth with his wife and two of his children. He works full-time  in the aviation industry and in his spare time he loves a good walk and watching Formula One.

Nigel Bathe

Volunteer and Trustee

Nigel is a volunteer predominantly being involved in the Greenpower Project as our lead engineer. He is involved in high level model flying, playing music, bonsai and foraging! He enjoys volunteering at SBC to encourage young people to develop practical and life-skills whilst also showing them that STEM-related subjects, taught at school, have a practical use in real life….but most of all have FUN! 

He is also an Ambassador for the Greenpower Charity.

Andrew Ashton-Smith


Andrew started volunteering with us in 2021. He has been a real asset in the skills he brings to the team, transferred from his job as a Technical Engineering Consultant to the food industry, specialising in texture analysis

Graham Nash

Graham Nash


Graham started volunteering at the Sylvia Beaufoy Centre Greenpower team in 2021. He is now a key part in ensuring that our cars make it to races. Graham also works as an AV and Data systems engineer.

Jeremy Cooper


Jeremy has a long history of cars, from taking part and winning the Shell Eco Marathon in the 90’s to restoring classic cars as a career. Jeremy started volunteering in 2021 and brings a wealth of experience in mechanical engineering.

Ian Phillips


Ian started volunteering on the Greenpower Project at the end of 2023. He currently works as a Technician for UCL.

Paul Eaton


Paul has been volunteering for our Greenpower Race Days since 2020. Paul brings many qualities to the team from logistics and transport to hospitality. Paul is a father of two, both of whom have been or are still in the Greenpower team. He owns and runs his own landscape gardening business, based in Fittleworth.

Tola Eaton


Tola started along with her Husband Paul, supporting our race days. Tola is very good at looking after trackside, from between races in the paddocks to taking photos of our cars as they go around the track. Tola is a Chief Executive of TechMarketView and has a keen interest in encouraging young people in STEM.

Katie Cooper


Katie started volunteering at race days in 2023. Katie is great at looking after the wellbeing of the young people making sure that we have a team that is ready to go! Katie is also a teacher in a school.

Geoff Conway

Lead Volunteer - DofE

Geoff started volunteering for the DofE award in 2021. Geoff has worked with the rest of the DofE team to build a fantastic programme for Bronze, Silver and now Gold. Geoff is a retired Head Teacher and has a really passion for being outdoors. Geoff is one of our trained outdoor leaders.

Maureen Chaffe


Maureen started volunteering with us in 2022. Maureen has a real love of the outdoors and is a real encourager and cares about seeing people develop. Maureen has been working closely with her husband David and Geoff to create a robust DofE Programme.

David Chaffe


David started volunteering alongside his wife Maureen in 2022. David has a long association with the Scouts and brings a vast knowledge of outdoor  skills that compliment others in the team.

Matt Tobin


Matt started volunteering in 2023. Matt has a great relationship with the young people and can get alongside them when they are finding things tough. Matt also works in Sales and Management during the day.

Chris Pink


Chris joined us as a volunteer in 2024. He has a background in the Forces & Emergency Services. Generally an outdoor activity enthusiast, he has his Mountain Leader Award which includes a vast amount of experience with the DofE Award Expedition element. He loves a good game of table tennis….and thinks he is “alright!!”. 

His current day job is working for himself in all carpentry things, also as a freelance instructor providing expedition training.

Ronnie Harris


Ronnie has been volunteering since 2021 and is one of our trained outdoor leaders. She just loves to get out walking with her dog. Ronnie is also a nurse in her day job.

Nigel Sneller


Nigel started volunteering with us in 2022 for our summer residential and in 2023 started volunteering for our DofE team. Nigel loves to get alongside the young people and teach them how to read a map. Nigel loves camping. Nigel is an Openreach Engineer in his day job.

Project Volunteers

Julia Kirk


Julia and her husband Chris started volunteering in 2021 and supported us with our first ever summer residential trip to Cornwall. Julia also works for Children’s Services and has over 20 years’ experience in early years education.

Chris Kirk


Chris started volunteering in 2021. Chris has a real willingness to support and help wherever is needed. Chris helped on our first summer residential in 2021, but also with other trips and events as and when needed. Chris works in flight control at Gatwick Airport.
